Sara Aubyn Bliss Spillman
Sara Spillman died peacefully on Monday, July 21, 2008. She was 92, a resident of Baton Rouge, a native of St. Francisville and a retired teacher of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. Her teaching career spanned 40 years, beginning in Woodville, Miss., and ending at Hollywood and Sharon Hills elementary schools in Baton Rouge. She attended Central High School, where she was salutatorian. After graduating from LSU in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in education, she went on to get her master's degree plus 30 credit hours from LSU. She was a member of the Teachers College and the Le Cercle Francais. Visiting at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, on Thursday, July 24, was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at Blackwater United Methodist Church on Friday at 9:30 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Bill Moon and Dr. Harold McNabb. Preceded in death by her husband, George Kelly Spillman. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen Spillman Taylor and Jimmy Taylor, of Baton Rouge, Georgi Spillman Irwin and Clark Irwin, of Springdale, Ark.; two granddaughters, Carrie Irwin Farrell and husband Josh Farrell and Lauren Irwin; sister, Helen Bliss Flores, of Baton Rouge; and brother, Walter Scott Bliss, of Denham Springs. Also preceded in death by her parents, Walter Scott Bliss Sr. and Aubyn Barrow Bliss; brothers, Henry and William Bliss Sr.; and sisters, Marion Bliss Miller, Ida Bliss Weiland, Margaret Bliss and Francis Bliss. She was a member of Baton Rouge Retired Teachers Association, Central Star Chapter 23 Order of the Eastern Star, Cypress Bayou Exxon Mobil Annuitant Club, Blackwater United Methodist Church and the Abundant Life Group. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Taylor, Clark Irwin, Todd Bliss, David McNabb, Jason Bliss and Paul Long. A special thanks to her two angel caregivers, Claire Cowart and Faye Partridge. Harold H. Beaucoudray was a 1948 Istrouma graduate.

Harold H. Beaucoudray
A resident of Prairieville, he died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at his home. He was 78 and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home on Monday, July 21, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Religious service at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 22, at 10 a.m. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jerrie Aguillard Beaucoudray; two daughters, Yvette Beaucoudray Guilbeau and husband Joey, and Denise Beaucoudray Whitehead and husband Bret; two sons, Byron Keith Beaucoudray and wife Debbie, and Neil G. Beaucoudray and wife Vicki; a sister, Carol Beaucoudray; a brother, Alden Beaucoudray; six grandchildren, Nicole and Rachel Beaucoudray, Bailey and Blake Whitehead, Aubrey Beaucoudray and Logan Venable; and a nephew, Steve Beaucoudray. Preceded in death by his parents, Alden C. and Juanita DeCuir Beaucoudray. Pallbearers will be Steve Beaucoudray, Joey Guilbeau, Bret Whitehead, Blake Whitehead, Billy O'quin, Dale Aguillard and Logan Venable. Honorary pallbearers are Scott Ashford and Mike Lambert. Thomas W. Higginbotham

 

A resident of Baker and native of Plaquemine, he passed away Monday, May 12, 2008, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. He was 74. He graduated from Istrouma High School in 1951 and was a member of Blackwater United Methodist Church. He retired from the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development, District 61, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Wednesday, May 14, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visiting at Blackwater United Methodist Church, 10000 Blackwater Road, Baker, on Thursday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tom Higginbotham and the Rev. Bill Moon. Interment in the church cemetery. Survived by his wife, Eloise Higginbotham; daughters, Joi Lohr and husband Pat, Gina Strong and husband David, and Erin Carroll and husband Jay; sons, Tom Higginbotham and wife Patti, and Bret Higginbotham and wife Zhanna; stepsons, Gary Richardson and wife Pat, Barry Richardson and wife Kathy, and Jim Richardson and wife Michelle; former wife and mother of his children, Beryl Higginbotham; sisters, Margaret McQueary and husband Lloyd, Faye Corsentino, Tucker Adams, Piper Losavio and husband Denny, and Jackie Cashio and husband B.J.; 16 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ella and Thomas W. Higginbotham Sr.; and two brothers, Edward and Rodney Higginbotham.

James Paul Jones
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008. He was 75. James was a 1951 graduate of Istrouma High School and was the team captain of the 1951 state championship football team. He attended college on a football scholarship and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from U.S. Steel Corp. Preceded in death by his parents, Marganie and John Jones. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Bobbye Kelley Jones; son, P. Douglas Jones and wife Nancy, of Prairieville; son, H. Dean Jones and wife Debbie, of Prairieville; daughter, Linda K. Clayton and husband Duane, of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Ashley Clayton, of Sarasota, Jami Davis and husband Kenny, of Denham Springs, and Sean Jones and Danielle Ricks, both of Prairieville; and several great-grandchildren. James is also survived by his brother, Charles Jones, Tallman, N.Y.; and sister, Lorena Long, Denham Springs. Pallbearers will be Doug Jones, Dean Jones, Robert Jones, Sean Jones, Duane Clayton and Randy Bayhi. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. until service at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Larry Badon. Burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.

Albia Catherine Thom Barksdale
A 1947 Istrouma Graduate

Albia Barksdale will be remembered for many things: her beautiful smile, loving heart and fun-loving nature. But she will be remembered most for her tireless devotion to the family she helped build with her husband, Roy Sr. A proud mother of three children, Roy Jr., Rick and Cathy, Albia selflessly dedicated her life to their well-being and to that of her husband of almost 60 years. Besides being an exemplary wife and mother, she was also instrumental in the support and success of several businesses with Roy Sr. Born Albia Catherine Thom on Valentine's Day, 1930, in Baton Rouge, she was a graduate of Istrouma High School and Baton Rouge Business College, and attended Abundant Life Church in Denham Springs. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by grandchildren, Letisha Tse and Stanley and Madeline Massett; and great-grandson, Grayson Tse. She will be deeply missed by many friends and family, and the love she shared will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her. Having peacefully made her transition at home with family by her side on Sunday, March 9, her memorial service will now be held at Abundant Life Church on Thursday, March 13, at 2 p.m. Friends and family are invited, through this medium, to attend.

She was a retired secretary with Dow Chemical of Plaquemine with 30 years of service. Billie died at 12:10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City. She was 75. Visitation at Broadmoor United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Ken Carroll. Entombment in Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum. She is survived by her husband, Henry Bell; son, Charles "Chip" Bell, wife Donna Polito Bell and their children, Brian, Chris, David and Lauren, of Westlake Village, Calif.; son, Thomas Bell, his children, Morgan and Taylor, and their mother, Denise Bell, of Baton Rouge; son, Christopher John Bell, wife Deborah, and their children, Emily and Elizabeth, of Amelia, Ohio; nephews, Dr. Tead Selby, St. Louis, and David Goldberg, Tucson, Ariz.; niece, Rachel Darnell, Tucson; and special friends, Nathalee and Ruth. Preceded in death by her mother, Winnie Bates McCurley; father, Joe McCurley; stepfather, Morris Caillouet; and sister, Betty Joe Wallis. She was a graduate of Istrouma High School and attended LSU. Virginia Ponder Pipes was an Istrouma 1953 graduate.

VIRGINIA PIPES

Virginia Ann "Ginger" Pipes, a resident of Franklin and native of Amite, died on Sunday, December 2, 2007, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

She is survived by her husband, Stanley H. Pipes Sr.; daughter, Cyndi Pipes Farris; son, Stanley H. Pipes Jr.; two sisters, Marion E. Givens and Carolyn P. Ellender; seven grandchildren, Justin Pipes, Stephanie Pipes, Kristin Pipes, Corey Trahan, Brandon Farris, Jessica Farris and Jason Farris; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan Farris and Emma Farris.

She was preceded in death by parents, James and Anna Ponder.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 7, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 8, at 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m., at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, 70816 (225-753-1440).

 

 

Wanda Palmer Courtney was a 1947 Istrouma graduate.

The perfect mother for three boys and wife for her late husband, Charles E. "Kink" Courtney Sr., Wanda passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 14, 2007, after a short stay at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet. She was born Wanda Dell Palmer on Feb. 9, 1930. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Friday, Nov. 16, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home chapel on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 8 a.m. until religious service at 9 a.m., conducted by Dr. Richard Blue and the Rev. Keith Zachary. Interment in Walker Baptist Church Cemetery in Walker. Wanda is survived by her three sons, Charles E. Courtney Jr. and his wife, Lynn, James H. Courtney and his wife, Nancy, and Bret A. Courtney, D.V.M., of Many, and his wife, Tammy; five grandchildren, Kristi Courtney Watts, Mamie Courtney Taylor, Jamie Courtney, Taylor Courtney and Hayden Courtney; and two great-grandchildren, Kalyee Freiberger and Lily Kathryn Watts. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Charles E. "Kink" Courtney Sr.; her parents, James Austin Palmer and Mamie Boyd Palmer; her sisters, Nenie Palmer and Geraldine "Jerry" Palmer Westbrook; a brother, James Austin Palmer Jr.; and a granddaughter, Sarah Courtney Freiberger. John Bozant was a 1951 Istrouma graduate.

John T. "Jay" Bozant
Jay Bozant passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 31, 2007. He was a native of Baton Rouge. When he passed, he joined many family members who preceded him in death, most notably his beloved wife of 51 years, the love of his life, Barbara Z. Bozant. A self-made and successful businessman and entrepreneur, at the time of his death Jay was CFO of Glenmora Oilfield Development with involvement in energy exploration and production. He was the former owner of D-Jay's School of Beauty (1964 to 2001), Sybil & Jay's Beauty Fashions, and had many other business interests including real estate. Jay served in the U.S. Army honorably in the mid-1950s. Jay was very social and participated in various local Mardi Gras events, including the Krewe of Tucumcari, serving as ball captain in 1987. He recently had served as the president of the Baton Rouge Round Table group and had been involved in organizing his high school reunions. He worked hard and enjoyed life, always eager for a good party or social engagement. He particularly enjoyed motorcycling and dancing. Jay was preceded in death by his mother, Sybil H. Cavalier; step-father, Harrison L. "Cal" Cavalier; and his brother, Robert "Bob" Fletcher. He was also preceded in death by his longtime business partner, Danny Pulley. Jay is survived by his children, Sherri B. Witt, Tara A. Talbot and Dr. John G. Bozant; his grandchildren, Wendi P. Campbell, Kenneth J. Talbot Jr. and Carl A. Talbot; and his great-grandchildren, Jessica A. Campbell and Aaron K. Campbell. Funeral services are being held at Greenoaks Funeral Home with viewing on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Monday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. until service at noon, with interment to follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
