"Support Group"
Written By-Survivors for Survivors
-------------------------------------
KNOWLEDGE-EQUALS-SURVIVAL
•A Laymen’s service manual for surviving prostate cancer (PCa).
•The best way to survive PCa. is to know the enemy. This remarkable
book, by
Dennis O’Hara & Jules Schwartz- PCa survivors, provides every reader with
useful information, knowledge & experience.
•Most books are written by professionals. These are two ordinary people, with
common sense, who are self educated regarding prostate cancer (PCa). Much
of
this knowledge comes from the Man to Man (M2M) support group research and
their own personal experiences. A lot of information and knowledge is gained
from the experiences of the many individual cases outlined in this book.
•Each case can be unique and quite different, especially the more advanced
cases. In this disease there is little black and white and so much grey
area. This book presents us with many individual stories that anyone can
relate to and understand.
•With over two million cases of PCa, it’s likely that sooner or later almost
everyone will know someone who has PCa. This book is loaded with
information
about a subject where there is plenty of ignorance. The case histories
alone
provide a vast amount of data.
•The focus of “Support Group” is about people like your next door
neighbor.
Emphasis is on how important it is to be informed and certainly not to
depend just on one doctor. Everyday ordinary people, like yourself, are
often faced with a dilemma: what treatment to opt for to deal with a disease
where there are so many grey areas.
•The interviews are proof of how information can be obtained at a support
group meeting. There are cases where a person’s life may have been saved,
thanks to something learned at a M2M meeting.
•The authors have met so many men who obtain vital information long after
important decisions were made. Many of these men would have taken a
different path if they had the knowledge then that they have now. We are
confident that those who read "SUPPORT GROUP" will be better informed.
•Most books, by doctors or laymen, cover only the beginning “A” and
“B”
stages of PCa. These books tend to be very technical and do not
explain
options. Our book does. We discuss these in just as if you would be at one
of our meetings and questioning one of the men about their particular choice
of treatment such as surgery, radiation, seed implantation, cryosurgery,
combined hormonal therapy, neoadjuvant therapy, chemotherapy herbal
supplements and yes, even watchful waiting. We discuss intermittent
hormonal
therapy and much more.
•“SUPPORT GROUP” is current and used by many as a constant reference tool.
•A short but informative chapter on African Americans and PCa.
•A chapter on the Side by Side group for the significant others of PCa
survivors. These ladies stand tall with us through the whole ordeal of
prostate cancer and deserve a tremendous amount of credit and recognition.

Dear Dennis,
Some time ago I posted something on PCAI abut some of the books which I had
read while recuperating from RRP in 1998. I had something to say about
Mike Korda's book which was less than complimentary and in his defense you
wrote to me. You told me about how he had contributed to the education of
members of your group and others and you asked if I would read your
book. Of course I said "yes" and you sent it to me with the
inscription
"To Bill -- Best Wishes -- Dennis O'Hara.
It took a long time because I wanted to read it thoroughly and evaluate it
in my own mind. You asked if I would do that and then write to you and
tell you what I thought of it.
I'm only sorry that Jules isn't with us so that I could tell him as I am
telling you that every man who is diagnosed with this terrible disease
should have a copy of this book. Not only should he have it in his
possession but he should keep it by his bedside and read from it every
night. It should be with him so that he can partake of its contents
whenever he is feeling down or whenever he feels like things are going in
the wrong direction. The two of you did a wonderful job of bringing the
truth to those of us who have been smitten.
I am not going to try to compare "Support Group" with any of the other
books I've read because it stands alone. It provides us with insight and
information. It puts us in touch with others who, like us, have known the
despair that is PCa. It educates and demonstrates. Is is fact and
more
importantly, it is truth. Thanks for taking the time to write it and next
time you visit Jules wherever he now lies, thank him out loud, not only for
me but for all the others he has helped.
You are right, Dennis. We are the masters of our own fate and we can't
trust our bodies to anyone but ourselves. If we don't have the information
we need to understand what our treatment should be, we'd better damn well
find it somewhere. I only wish that all the support groups were blessed
with the kind of leadership yours has.
Again, my thanks for sending your book. I will be recommending it to
anyone who I know is faced with or knows someone who is faced with Pca.
Most sincerely,
DwD
