Hughes, Janet
Mims "Mama Janie" A longtime Baton Rouge and
Prairieville resident and originally from Greenwood, Miss., she
died at 5:14 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Baton Rouge General
Medical Center-Bluebonnet. She was 73 and retired from BASF
Wyandotte with 25 years of service. She graduated in 1950 from
Istrouma High School, where she was active in the choir and many
other activities. She also attended LSU and became active in Phi
Sigma Alpha. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert
Benjamin Mims; mother, Verdie Richardson Mims; granddaughter, Erin
Renae Hughes; and former husband, Terry Denver Hughes Sr. She is
survived by two sons, Terry Denver Hughes Jr. and his wife, Sharon
Holliday Hughes, and Michael Carey Hughes and his wife, Wanda
Gillespie Hughes. She is also survived by a former
daughter-in-law, Danita Hughes; and two sisters, Marie Davis and
Bobbye Fabre. She was blessed with four grandchildren and a
stepgrandchild, Terry Denver Hughes III, Abby Renae Hughes Beagle,
Cary Brock Hughes, Michael Brandon Hughes and Laura Elizabeth
Netterville. She also had two stepchildren, Steve Stockton and
Cara Zamecki. Her passions in life were gardening, cooking and
teaching her grandchildren to fish. In her earlier life, she had
been active as a Cub Scout den mother, room mother and Sunday
school teacher. She was active in the choir at Fairfields Baptist
Church and had recently joined Florida Boulevard Baptist Church.
The family would like to give special thanks to her friends,
family, neighbors and church members who were so supportive during
her illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
American Cancer Society. Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst
Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 4 p.m. Thursday,
April 21, until memorial service at 6 p.m.
